FLAMENCO & CLASSICAL SPANISH DANCE
JINI LIM
Jini was first introduced to Spanish Dance and Flamenco as a teenager whilst studying classical ballet and contemporary dance at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). She pursued her interest in this artform and continued her studies with internationally acclaimed castanet virtuoso and founding director of Perth’s Danza Viva Spanish Dance Company, Deanna Blacher (OAM). Under Deanna’s guidance, Jini continued to develop her understanding of the varied styles of Spanish Dance including Escuela Bolera (classical Spanish dance in soft shoes), regional (traditional and folk dances), Baile Espanol (Neo-classical Spanish Dance) and Flamenco (the traditional artform from Andalucia). Jini first travelled to Spain in 1998 where she was able to experience all these styles, studying with Mercedes León (Escuela Bolera), Juanjo Linares (folk and regional dance), Isabel Quintero (Baile Espanol) and Merche Esmeralda (Flamenco). An interest to learn more about flamenco prompted her to move to Melbourne in 2000, studying at Flamenco Performing Arts Studio followed by a three-month trip to Madrid in 2004, |
where she studied at Amor de Dios. Alongside these more extended periods of study Jini has participated in numerous short courses and workshops in Australia with local and overseas teachers including Antonio Vargas, Ana Romero, Paloma Gomez and Clarisa di Salvo. Despite being steeped in tradition, Flamenco is a forever evolving artform, and Jini continues to learn and attend regular classes with Tomas Arroquero.
Jini has had the privilege of working with talented artists in Australia and has performed in a wide variety of settings. Her performance credits include Sol y Sombra (1993), Flamenco Under the Stars (1995), Nueve(1998) and Flamenco in the Valley (1999) with Danza Viva Spanish Dance Company, Sangre Flamenco (2000) and Flamenco (2001) with Arte Kanela, Retratos (2012) and Spain (2014) with Nella Randone and Fragmentos (2015) with Tomas Arroquero. Since 2015, Jini has performed with Sonidos Flamencos, including the Café Culture Series tour of regional Victoria (2017) and performances for the Boite (2015-2022).
Jini enjoys sharing her experience with others and has been teaching dance for many years. Given the unique and often complex nature of Spanish Dance and Flamenco, Jini draws on her experience as a Physiotherapist and Feldenkrais Practitioner to facilitate learning and to create a positive experience for her students.
